Discover the contralto voice
Kayla Collingwood is a contralto, classical music educator, and designer/creator from New Zealand, now based in France.
She is dedicated to making classical music accessible and engaging for both new and returning audiences, believing deeply in its ability to inspire and connect. Her professional singing experience spans a wide range of contexts across New Zealand, France, and beyond. Since fully committing to her creative career in 2020, she has continued to refine her artistry, transitioning from mezzo-soprano to contralto and honing her technical and interpretive skills. Alongside her work as a performer and educator, Kayla brings her creative vision to life through design and writing, embracing a multifaceted approach to the arts.
So, what is a contralto? The contralto is the rarest female vocal range, celebrated for its rich, dark timbre and distinctive warmth. Its unique depth lends itself to a diverse repertoire in opera, oratorio, art songs, and contemporary works, including roles and works written for closely related voice types as well as works written specifically with the contralto voice in mind. Kayla’s journey to discovering and embracing her contralto voice has enabled her to bring her unique sense of artistry into her performances, which often include new and rarely heard works as well as the classics!
